A message from Father Roy...
It shall come to pass I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions. Joel 3:1
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
What a delight it is to be with all of you on this grand adventure of the Catholic Faith and its manifestation through the gift of St. John Catholic School! It is my hope, over the next few years, we will endeavor together to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit as God makes greater things happen at St. John Parish.
Over the last few years, I’ve noticed a trend which reiterates the above passage of the Prophet Joel. Children and young people have been growing in numbers as the new evangelists of the 21st Century. They are bringing generations of parents and some grandparents back to the Church with a fervor and deep faith. The Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee is blessed to have such powerful witnesses of Jesus Christ. The Catholic School has become the bastions of these new evangelists.
Young Catholics are very demanding in a very appropriate way. They want authentic holiness tempered by humility and humor. The faith-filled Catholic youth of today’s 3G or 4G world uses technology to access their Catholic faith as way to take on the challenges of morality, justice, and peace. They love the Jesus who meets them in the relevance of the 21st Century. Often, they will view a Youtube® version of a Lifeteen® video or access the latest apologetics of the Catholic Faith to ready for a retreat. They listen to a variety of musical genres to learn about their faith, whether through the song “My God” by the contemporary Christian rock group Out of Darkness or Sammy Blaze’s rap song the Four Marks (of the Church). Yet these are the same Catholic young people singing O Salutaris at a two hour worship and praise Adoration. They expect much from their Catholic elders, whether their parents, grandparents, ordained, etc. They can discern the difference between the cheap, imitation Christian who make lots of promises but fails to deliver and the servant of Christ who leads by example.
I have been asked what my vision is for St. John Catholic School. The parish and school are one entity, a gift from God, regardless which side of the parking lot one finds oneself. Hence any vision requires the visionary to have the courage to blink often in order to see the Will of God clearly:
•The First Blink ~ Who exactly makes up St. John Parish? Who makes up St. John Catholic School? It is time to redo the Parish registration for 2012. After the first of the Year, the parish will undergo a renewal of membership at the weekend Masses. Is this enough? Hardly…Many folks have come to me and have told me they are alumni of St. John School. It is time to build up an alumni association in which the generations meet and the dreams, prophecy, and visions can come together. The beauty of great art is realized by many souls engaging the masterpiece. The good of the whole cannot be determined by the vision of the pastor alone. We have to do this together.
•The Second Blink ~ What does St. John Parish want/need as a faith community? How will St. John Parish further evangelize in Panama City? In what ways will St. John School become not only the premier gift of formation of souls but also the gift of evangelization of Christ’s Message to Panama City? The parish will undergo a survey of needs and wants in early 2012 and establish a new vision and mission statement.
•The Third Blink ~ What does the Second Blink look like as a site master plan? A team will convene to take the data from the survey and meet with an architect develop several design concepts for review. What does the Second Blink look like as the mission of Christ in Panama City. Both parish and school leadership will become more visible to the greater Panama City area as a gift of Holy Spirit sent to bring others to Christ. The School will continue to educate the future Christian leaders of Panama City. Alliances with the Gulf Coast State College and Florida State University will continued to be pursued.
•The Fourth Blink ~ The words of the above prophecy will manifest in the form of town meetings in which the vested parishioner and school supporter will gather and tweak the vision until it comes into a focus for everyone to see where St. John Parish and School can possibly go. Granted, not everyone will personally benefit from all the various manifestations, but everyone can be part of the mission to help bring others to Christ.
• The Fifth Blink ~ Finalize the design concept for future facilities and place it before the new Bishop. Upon his recommendations and blessing, a feasibility study will take place to ascertain the giving potential to make the vision a reality in a timely fashion.
•The Sixth Blink ~ Everyone, claiming to be a supporter of St. John Parish and St. John School, will be presented with the vision and the commitment requirement to see this vision through. This will involve investment of capital, committee work, and talented execution of the plan. Phasing of project may be the necessary to accomplish the vision.
•The Seventh Blink ~ Set in motion the vision of St. John the Evangelist Parish and School, adjusting along the way the things that need adjusting.
•The Eighth Blink ~ Joyfully embrace the next vision set by the Holy Spirit in the coming decades.
In the month that I have been here, I have been blest to meet the extraordinary souls who show tremendous love for Christ in the care for others. The students of St. John School have asked great questions at the weekly Mass. I look forward to working with all of you in the coming years.
Dream big for Christ, serve well for His Kingdom!
God Bless…. Rev. Roy C. Marien
